Preparing your child for First Holy Communion is the first step parents will take in introducing their children to the Catholic Faith. At your child's baptism, you vowed to raise them in the Catholic Faith. That preparation begins with baptism and, hopefully, is a daily part of family life; from family prayers to weekly Mass, and Sunday classes.
Because we believe that parents are the first teachers of their children, the faith formation program at St. Peter's works with parents to help them prepare their children at home for Reconciliation and Holy Communion. In addition to weekly Sunday classes, parents, with the help of provided resources, will teach their children. This preparation at home is encouraged by the Diocese of Lansing and is designed to bring the Catholic Faith into daily living and help parents whose own faith formation may be lacking. The result is a family stronger in the faith, with greater understanding and knowledge of Jesus Christ.
When you believe your child is ready for First Holy Communion, please reach out to Jessica Schaub (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.g) or Fr. Mark Martin (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). They will meet with you and your child to determine if they are not only educated in the basics of the faith, but desire to receive Jesus in the Eucharist. Once all are in agreement of the child's preparedness and desire, a date will be scheduled for your child's First Holy Communion at a Sunday Mass.
If, as a parent, you feel that your own formation was lacking, we are here to help! First, meet with Fr. Mark or Jessica Schaub. We have the Made for Joy program coming to St. Peter's this Fall. All adults are encouraged to attend Theology & Coffee Class on Sunday mornings. This adult class meets at the same time as the children's classes, from 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM, snuggly nestled between 8:00 & 10:30 AM Sunday Masses. Parents who attend Theology & Coffee model for their children that we are never too old to keep learning the faith. Plus, there is coffee. And donuts. And the class is free. It really doesn't get much better than that!
